Thanks. The story is larger than my simple entry. The church is trying to compensate for the slights it inflicted on the mestizos dating back 300 years. The parish priest acknowledged that in his rationale for awarding the Morada to them. When it abandoned El Norte, it failed to provide priests to the mixed-race New Mexicans. So, some of the mestizos developed their own 'church.' Later, the church tried to suppress the Penitentes whom they saw as competing with them for the faithful.
